Welcome to my Race Walking web home.
What began as a journal to racewalking has been cut very short by a number of factors. While cruising along comfortably at 4:30 - 4:40 km speeds, suffering several DQ's and coaching equal to "slow down" (no form corrections just go slow!) and mounting medical issues, I have turned to jogging which has itself become a meditation experience. All things being equal, I will continue to journal live daily, thankful for forward movement with the sight of Orion's Belt, the Pleiades, the ocean, sun rises and sunsets at every event, if I ain't working, you'll find me pushing the ragged edge daily.
P.S. If anyone wants to buy this domain name, give me a shout......
*) Trigeminal Neuralgia. Who knows where this came from and why I get episodes, it's a pain. The medications helped during the first attack, now it's a "It hurts when I do this doc." So I just try to avoid touching the left side of my head during certain times. No drugs, just grit the teeth and deal with it.
*) Adductor tear. It was so painful after Landover, MD March 2009 to walk pedestrian pace I stopped as much activity as I could. Of course I gained back most of the 35 pounds I'd lost in the previous 6 months (Yes, I went from 265 to 230 in 6 months just race walking). By August 2009 itching to get active (and get the waist line back down) I hit the road again. Slowly until I felt pain, then I began to add jogging in. Seems I could jog for miles with no issues but adding in the race walking part, it's touch and go.
*) PVC's. Premature Ventricular Contractions. Seems my goals in heart rate training hit a snag. My resting heart rate is between 38 and 42 beats per minute. November 2009, with heart monitor on and time and rate checking I couldn't get to my target zone and never reached above 104. Turns out it was 104% not beats per minute. That night it felt like my heart was bruised. Heart was pounding so hard trying to lay down it felt like my fingertips were going to pop off. Long story short, one Holter Monitor later they saw just shy of 12,000 extra beats in a 24 hour period and that was a good day! Amazingly though, during a stress test, watching the monitors with the doctors they went away. Zero PVC episodes. That now explains why it actually feels good to "Hit the road."
I keep a personal daily log of events. That now runs back to August 2008 day by day, here I will give highlights and milestone markers. Feel free to send me comments if you'd like. Click a product and support me if you care or link up. US Race Walking is a laughed at sport and not taken very seriously. But like soccer, the rest of the world takes this sport very seriously. The exact same Olympic medal count in race walking as there is in every other sport of the Games.
(* Note) 100% self taught is not 100% accurate. I had one lesson in the late 80's in Ann Arbor with Frank Alongi for about 15 minutes. A lean 185 28 year old guy I was doing 7 and half minute miles. Frank called me a sway back and to lean forward at the waist a little bit and let gravity help. I continued to practice but life got in the way. Recently the New Hampshire Seacoast Walkers have had privilege of hosting two world class walkers, Theron Kissinger and Erin Taylor. I've attended the lessons but haven't been coached, yet.
